Carpenter ants are one of the best beginner ant species available, and some of the most visually impressive ants you can keep. Unlike their reputation in the wild, captive Carpenter Ants are perfectly safe and do not damage formicariums or acrylic enclosures. They are large, slow-growing colonies that are very tolerant of minor care mistakes, making them an ideal first ant for new keepers.
